Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
Presented by Mokhwa Theatre Company
Directed by Oh Tae-Suk
Performed in Korean with English subtitles

This staging is part of Korean Cultural Waves,
The Fourth New Malden Arts Festival 2010.

"I saw this production twice. It is only with exceptionally good productions that one leaves the theatre the second time feeling more inspired than one did the first time! Don't miss it" British Theatre Guide

"The production swirls by in a whirl of vividly coloured costumes and disciplined traditional dance and movement. The fight scened be come skillful martial dances; the ball is a perfectly accomplished, giddying ritual" Financial Times

This highly stylised Romeo and Juliet paints the star struck lovers' story with striking images, glorious martial art sequences, live music and impressive dance, ritual and gesture. Korean in both temperament and setting, Oh Tae-Suk's enthralling interpretation, freely adapted from Shakespeare's most famous play, is a production of arresting beauty. The performers' physical vocabulary, heightened emotional state and comic timing create a sensual fusion that lacks nothing from the absence of the bard's language. You may never think about Shakespeare in the same way once you see what this company can do with it..

Duration: 90mins

The play describes the effort to keep DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) from thoughtless and reckless land development.
It is a humorous tragedy with 10 auspicious animals trying to protect their land, DMZ. When the animals hear people are going dig all the mines out in order to develop the land for railroad construction, the animals know another battlefield is going to happen in the end.

They revive the young soldiers, who died in the Korean War and ware buried at DMZ, by feeding them both North and South Korea forget their ideological conflicts and induce people to build an underground tunnel instead, so that the animals can keep DMZ as an eternal safe zone. The animals' innocent and pure respect for nature warns the danger of destroying it under the name of 'development'.

The play borrows animals' eyes to look into the past, present and the future of Korea. DMZ in this play is beyond the symbol of division and war; it is an imaginative and mysterious place, where animals in fairy tales or myths such as deer, ponies, goats, donkeys, mandarin ducks try to keep safe and untouched.
